The Appalachian Trail in Georgia


The 76 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia are all within the Chattahoochee National Forest. The trail in Georgia is often strenuous, as well as somewhat remote. The most popular Appalachian Trail hike in the state is the 5-mile roundtrip hike from the Byron Reece parking area near Neels Gap to the summit of Blood Mountain. The Appalachian Trail's southern terminus is on Springer Mountain.

Georgia Trails is a well-done site that hopes to expand the whole state. For now it has some good info on north Georgia trails. Trails can be serached by length, location and/or features as well as by name.

The North Georgia website is a wonderfully informative site. Anyone interested in the region will find this site engaging.

Mountain Crossings is a must visit store on the AT at Neels Gap. They have a hostel for AT hikers most years, though it will not be open in 1998.
