The Appalachian Trail in Maine
The 280 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Maine are some of the most rugged and
remote that the famed footpath has to offer. From Katahdin at the trail's
northern terminus, the trail heads south through an area known as the 100-mile wilderness. There the
A.T. passes through a section punctuated only by logging roads. The Saddlebacks, Bigelows and other
mountain ranges are popular with hikers for their rugged terrain and scenic beauty. Near the border with
New Hampshire, the A.T. passes through Mahoosuc Notch in a stretch known as the toughest mile on the
trail. Car-sized boulders must be negotiated as the trail winds for 0.9-mile through the narrow ravine.
A.T. Clubs in Maine
The Maine Appalachian
