The Appalachian Trail in Vermont

In the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Appalachian Trail shares the footpath with the older Long Trail for 95 miles as it passes through the Green Mountain National Forest. At Sherburne Pass in central Vermont, the A.T. branches off, heading east into New Hampshire. The Long Trail continues north to the Canadian border, to complete its north-south traverse of the state.

High mountain ponds including Stratton Pond, Griffith Lake and Little Rock Pond are one of the key features of the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. Hiking is not advised during the spring thaw when the trail can be quite muddy.

A.T. Clubs in Vermont

The Green Mountain Club cares for the 116 miles from Vermont 12 to the Massachusetts border. They also cover the entire Long Trail. The GMC itself has a web site. The Connecticut chapter also has its own home page.
